Photo Montage | Rockfort, Jamaica
Preparing some images for my forthcoming talk on Helen Caddick, a traveller, photo collector, and travel writer. This presentation focuses on her 1901 journey to Jamaica, part of a broader trip across the Americas.
Diary entry: Friday, 31st May (1901) – "In the afternoon rode on a car to Rock Fort, close to the sea and lovely views."
Helen Caddick’s work is a deeply racialized colonial travel record that combines photography and writing, documenting the places she visited while reinforcing imperial hierarchies and stereotypes.
Rockfort, Jamaica, was a British military outpost built to defend the island’s coastline during the colonial period, though little of it remains today. This photograph was taken by Tracey Thorne in 2022, in Kingston, Jamaica.
Her journals are preserved in the Library of Birmingham archives, spanning 12 volumes—my research focuses on Volume 6.
The photo montage is overlaid with a cyanotype image of Helen Caddick, created from a self-portrait found in her diary.
